General Information

The municipality of Shtime/Štimlje is located south of Prishtinë/Priština, on the road from the capital to Prizren. There are small Ashkali and Roma communities living in the municipality, but the vast majority of the population is Albanian. The communities interact on a regular basis.
Unemployment is the most important issue for the communities in Shtime/Štimlje.

Demographics

Shtime/Štimlje's demographics have changed significantly since the 1999 conflict. Most members of the Serb and Bosniak community moved out of the municipality after the conflict, and have not returned since. Most Ashkali live in the city of Shtime/Štimlje or in the village of Gjurkoc/?urkovce.

Political Representation

The Mayor, Naim Ismaili, was elected in the first round of mayoral elections with 50.62% of votes. His party, PDK, is the governing party in the municipality. Communities are represented in the Municipality through the Communities Committee and the Municipal Communities Office.

Safety and Freedom of Movement

The Kosovo Police is responsible for security in the municipality. The community members are generally satisfied with their services. Moreover, no ethnically-motivated incidents were reported in the last year and people feel free to travel around the municipality.

Education

The municipality of Shtime/Štimlje has primary and secondary educational facilities. It offers education in Albanian only, as all community members residing in the municipality speak Albanian. There is a specific school dedicated to the education of Ashkali community members. Access to education is mainly limited by the poor financial situation of many community members.

Most community members make use of public and private clinics, and can communicate with the doctors in their own language.
